Congratulations to the newest Nobel Prize laureate, Katalin Karikó!

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded this year’s Nobel prize in Physiology or Medicine to Hungarian biochemist Katalin Kariko and U.S. immunologist Drew Weissman, for their discoveries that, among others, enabled the development of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. With 13 billion COVID vaccines administered it is hard to find a discovery that is more impactful on our daily lives than theirs. A University of Szeged graduate Katalin Kariko is the 14th Hungarian Nobel Prize laureate and the first Hungarian female Nobel Prize winner.
