Establishing new traditions: Celebrating the Māori New year for the first time, as New Zealand’s Official Holiday.

On 24 June, Ambassador Hetesy and his wife Katalin Hetesy celebrated with Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro, his husband, Sir Richard Davies and Fellow Ambassadors for the first time in history, New Zealand's new national holiday, Matariki. The Māori New Year acknowledges the important role the 9-star cluster (Pleiades, or Fiastyúk in Hungarian) plays in Māori culture in way-finding and bringing communities together. An unforgettable night, filled with culinary delights, waiata and enchanting stories at the Government House, thanks to our dear Hosts!
